  • Opening day at the Apple Store at Lenox Square

    By Fabian W.
    5/12/02
"Finally", I said to myself a few months ago when I found out an Apple Store was coming to my immediate area. Well maybe not immediate, but with only a 2 hour drive it's pretty close. So on opening day I took the drive down to Atlanta to visit the Lenox Square store. I didn't make it in time for the opening but arrived a few hours later. I saw the store right when I came in from a side entrance. The front looked like the pictures I had seen online with the two lit-up Apple logo's on the black background.

The inside looked great, even better then the pictures. "I used to not like them. I thought they looked too much like a Gap, but it really doesn't." said Shawn King host-producer YourMacLife when I asked him what he thought of the store after his first ever visit to an Apple store. He also pointed out that the Gap ironically is right below the store on the lower level. "I took a picture." he said laughing.

The store is set up like all the other stores in that it is split up into the different sections of multimedia stations such as Home, Pro, Photo, Movies, and Music. At the Home and Pro sections all the newest Mac's were on display including the new 800Mhz PowerBooks, and displays. At the entrance a PowerBook was set up with a 23" Cinema HD display using the new DVI to ADC converter. I really like how you can "Present" a quicktime movie on one screen and work on the other. Just imagine watching a DVD on the 23" Cinema HD display while working on the side at your 800Mhz PowerBook, or dual 1Ghz PowerMac for that matter. Ahhh the dreams.

At the photo section several mac were loaded with iPhoto and digital cameras so that users could experience the easiness of iPhoto themselves. Store employees were also taking mothers day pictures and printing them directly from iPhoto. It all took just a few minutes.

The movie section had PowerBooks and a G4 1Ghz running iMovie and digital cam corders. I made a small video of the store, exported it as a small web quicktime movie, and uploaded it to my iTools account. I really can't get much simpler than that. The music section was of course running iTunes, and had an iPod with each Mac which were all running under Mac OS X. Lots of people were standing at this sections just listening to music. The software isle, which was located in the center of the store, had all kinds of software. All the newest applications were available even some that were not expected. "I was surprised of the number of specialty audio titles", said Shawn King. I also liked the book section which featured many of the "Missing Manual" series, and had a book for most any app. It also had some Mac magazines such as MacWorld, and MacHome, but my favorite was missing: MacAddict. It seems like it isn't professional enough to be on the line-up.

In the back there is a small hidden section with printers, and scanners right beside the Apple Theater where presentations were going on all day. The most interesting was "See the new Adobe Photoshop 7" which was presented by a representative from Adobe. He showed several basic tricks such as getting rid of wrinkles on a face, making brushes, and color correcting photos. There was also one for digital photography by Nikon and presentations for iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, AirPort, and several others that were all very well done.

I also liked the Kids section which had some of the "older" iMac's running several kids games. I played Tony Hawk Pro Skater, while I was taking a break on the round seats which were actually pretty comfortable.

I have been wanting an Apple store in my area for a while and being able to finally go was great. I really enjoyed my visit, and talking to people who actually knew a lot about Apple was an incomparable difference from the usual sales representative at our local CompUSA. It was fun to be surrounded by people who are as loyal to a company as I am. Which is what separates Apple from any other computer company in the world.
