Apple late Wednesday, seemingly by accident, reportedly posted information on its website showing several specifications of the PowerMac G5, the companies alleged new desktop machine, which is expected to be unveiled this coming Monday during Steve Job's WWDC keynote in San Francisco.
The specifications were shown in the form of a single GIF file on the Apple Store's PowerMac G4 page depicting only text information about the G5. According to MacNN the Apple Store went offline around 12:05 a.m. Friday, and was back online approximately 20 minutes later with the GIF image removed. While several websites have taken down screen shots of the page after they were contacted by Apple, a screen shot can still be found at MacNN.
The image promoted the G5 with the line: "The worlds fastest personal computer", and provided the following specifications:
1.6GHz, 1.8GHz or Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 processors;
Up to 1GHz processor bus;
Up to 8GB of DDR SDRAM;
Fast Serial ATA hard drives;
AGP 8X Pro graphics options from NVIDIA or ATI;
Three PCI or PCI-X expansion slots;
Three USB 2.0 ports;
One FireWire 800, two FireWire 400 ports;
Bluetooth & AirPort Extreme ready;
Optical and analog audio in and out;
These specifications tie in with rumors that Apple will use IBM's new 64bit PowerPC 970 processors in their new machines. In October of last year IBM released information about the PowerPC 970 which showed current clock speeds ranging from only 1.4 to 1.8 GHz, but according to rumors Apple could reach 2.0 GHz by over-clocking the chip.
The PowerMac G5 is expected to be unveiled officially during Steve Job's keynote at the World Wide Developers Conference this Monday. The keynote will be shown live thru satellite at most Apple stores, and Apple will provide a replay of the event Monday afternoon over Quicktime.
