  • Green Berets (Myth II expansion)

    By Mike Vande Ven Jr.
    http://homepage.mac.com/giantmike/

    Manufacturer: Take 2 Interactive
    Price: $19.99

    System Requirements:
  • PowerMac 120 Mhz or faster
  • 64 MB RAM
  • MacOS 7.5 or later
  • 500MB hard drive space
  • Includes a copy of Myth II

  • Green Berets is an add-on for the immensely popular game, Myth II. It transforms Myth II into a war in southeast Asia, where you have all new units, weapons, and and need new skills to come out victorious.

    Installation:
The installation for this add-on is quite strange. You have to drag certain files, from certain folders on the CD, to certain places in your Myth II folder on your hard drive. To increase the difficulty, one of the files on the CD (at least the CD I have), is not named correctly (the correct name is in the manual). If you do not rename it, the game will not work.

    Usage:
Green Berets is more than just a few maps, or a couple new WW II scenarios, it's a total conversion for Myth II. Everything down to the progress bars for loading maps has changed. Units, graphics, voices, maps, everything! However, it will also allow you to play the original Myth II maps, so you don't have to constantly swap plugins. Very high quality.

Speaking of high quality, those new units are to die for. Not only are they very well rendered (even zoomed in all the way), but they have real human-like movements. They shake when firing a large gun, they actually rear their arms back to throw grenades, and quiver when hit. Also, their voices reflect what they are doing, such as when a medic heals a unit, he will sometimes say "Hold still."

Not only are the units done well, but so is the overall graphics/scenery. The original Myth had very good graphics, then Myth II greatly increased the quality, but this add-on seems to blow even those away. The water looks like water, rain looks more like rain, trees look ALOT more like trees, and so on. The people at Take 2 really put some effort into making this a visually stunning experience.

Ah, but were would we be in a good war game without weapons? Green Berets uses real weapons such as machine guns with tripods, M1 rifles, stick grenades, rocket launchers, mortar launchers, and even C4 explosives. Each weapon has a specific range, as well as damage, and accuracy. That's where the strategy starts to come in.

The name of this game is strategy. It will NEVER work to just rush into everything, and hope you survive. You have to use planning and wits to place your guys, send the correct units in to do their jobs, protect certain units, and more. If you don't do this, you will never pass the first level, as you only have a limited number of units at any one time, against an entire army of southeast Asians.

And that is what makes this game so difficult, even on the easier settings. A horde of enemies, plus careful strategy, plus seemingly insurmountable odds adds up to one of the most difficult games out. And it doesn't make it any easier that the creators actually put a decently smart AI into the computer controlled players, as they will dodge your grenades, and attack from behind. Green Berets will humble even the best of players.

Green Berets inherits Myth II's multiplayer community, by using the exact same Bungie.net rooms, and TCP/LAN protocols as non Green Beret users. A big plus is you get a huge assortment of people to play against (however, many don't have Green Berets so you can't always get that type of game going), and you can play classic maps as well as the newly installed maps. Multiplayer Myth II games are some of the best I have seen, and Green Berets can only make that better.

    Problems:
Besides the installation snafu, one problem seems to remain. If you are using RAVE as your video mode of choice, after level one, you will not see exactly what you need to see. The cure for this is to use another graphics mode. Hopefully, a patch will address this soon.

    Conclusion:
This is definitely a great add-on that extends the life of a game (which is still highly played after being debuted 3 years ago). The World War II plugins brought the combat dimension to Myth II, but not nearly to the extent of this add-on package.

    Pros:Cons:
  • Very Good new graphics
  • All new units
  • Brand new storyline
  • Requires warlike strategies
  • Brings new life into an old favorite
  • Minor glitches
  • Sometimes too difficult

  • Rating: 8 out of ten Mac Faces.
