During my last day at MacWorld CreativePro I managed to spend most of the day on the Expo floor. So today I'll concentrate on highlighting a few products that sparked my interest the most.
First off all Sony has a fingerprint recognition device that will allow you to log in, for one, Mac OS X. The device, called Puppy, is simply a small box with a touch pad in the center. It works well on the show floor, but unfortunatly due to it being on someone else's machine I can't tell you how well it recognizes specific fingerprints. It's easy to tell me that I'm not "John Doe" (a specific user), it's obviously harder to tell that I am actually the specific user "Fabian Westerwelle".
Another interesting product is PhoneValet from Parliant. The USB device hooks up to your phone jack and works together with the software to manage all calls made through your phone line. The app can announce who is calling, act as a caller ID, log your calls, and can actually act by running AppleScripts or send e-mails when a call comes in.
According to the developer the device/software works even while your computer is asleep. The price is $129 and is available now.
A couple of other products included the HarmonySST 768. This universal remote works with anything that supports IR receiving including TV's, VCR, DVD players, and Mac's with an IR port. The major selling point of the device is it's internet support. When a user programs his remote for a specific device, the HarmonySST will automatically add it to an internet database, automatically making it available to other users. The SST 768 is priced at $299, while a slimed-down version of the remote is available for $199.
RadTech had a small iPod cover displayed at their booth. The grey felt cover is still in production stages but should be available in the next couple of weeks.
Shaun Jackson Design showed off a very interesting lap-top bag. The "Back Office" bag folds into three compartments, while the cover flips up in order to allow you to open your lap-top. Each of the side compartments act as a separate space to put notebooks, camcorders, or any other device that you would take on the road. The bag currently supports only iBooks and PowerBooks up to 15". A 17" version will be available in July. The current bag is available now for $149.95.
A couple of other products worth noting were TechSmith's Video Codec for Quicktime that allows for lossless, but yet highly compressed video of on-screen activity such as screen captures, and training videos. Additionally, igo4mac.com had a complete booth devoted to their iGo for the iMac. The iGo is an iMac stand that includes an illuminated wire handeling base, mousepad, speaker holders, and a space to put digital devices. Two versions are available. One with wheels for use while sitting at a chair, the other is a standing model with solid brass feet.
The sitting model is priced at $499, while the standing model is $599.
igo4mac.com is currently taking pre-orders for the iGo at their website.
After the show floor closed I was surprised how fast booths were taken down. Immediately yellow tape was wrapped around the booths, screens were disconnected, signs were taken down, and after about twenty minutes the first booths were almost fully gone.
Well that's it for the first MacWorld CreativePro Expo in New York. While attendance was lower and the Expo was smaller compared to the old MacWorld Expo, I can't complain. After all this years Expo was really a completely new show all in itself, and for the target audience, creative professionals that is, it did very well. Conference sessions were packed, and the expo floor was filled. While the expo may be over, we won't be stopping here. Check back in the coming weeks for product related interviews, and reviews. Also be sure to check out our upcoming picture galleries from the event.
