  • Yoot Tower

    By Mike Vande Ven Jr.
    http://homepage.mac.com/giantmike/

    Manufacturer: Sega
Price: $39.95 Buy it at Outpost.Com!

    System Requirements:
  • PowerMac
  • MacOS 7.5 or higher
  • 32 MB RAM
  • 100 MB Hard Drive Space

  • Yoot Tower, the sequel to SIM Tower, has everything from the original version, plus more great stuff. From different locations. to all new structures. to better customization, this game has everything you want in a tower build simulation

    Installation:
Remember the days of a simple archive for installations, and everything in one place on the hard drive? Well, this game's installation should bring back memories. With two files, a Simple Text Read Me, and a self expanding archive, there isn't much to the install process. Double click the archive, select a location, and expand. That's all there is to it.

    Usage:
Just like the original, the interface for Yoot Tower is excellent. When you begin, you can either start a new tower, or load an existing one. From there, you have the simple "select a tool, and use it" approach. To build a office, select it and place it. To build an elevator, select it and use it. Get it?

One of the first things I noticed was that the Quarters and days are now months. Instead of two week days and one weekend day per quarter, and four quarters per year, there is now 12 months in a year. So, now one full rotation of the clock, is actually an entire month. This does make it much easier to figure out where in the year you are, but it also seems to make the years go by wat too fast.

Arguably, the biggest change between SIM Tower and Yoot Tower, is the ability to select a starting location. Each location has its own specifications, such as starting funds, how high and low towers can be built, what structures can be built, And what type of people will come. This is wonderful, in that it makes the game playable for a much greater period of time. Once your concur one location, get ready for an all new challenge at another location.

One of the greatest challenges of the SIM City series was to get through disasters, without having to toss your city. Well, that is one of the things that was missing in SIM Tower. That game only had a couple disasters. Luckily, Yoot Tower picked up in this area. Now there are over three times as many disasters, and it makes the gameplay much more challenging.

Other small but nice improvements of Yoot Tower over SIM Tower include window placement, object dragging, and info bubbles. This version of the Tower series remembers your window placement and size upon opening an existing game. Also, Yoot Tower allows you to select a structure such as an office, and drag it across the screen instead of clicking over and over to place long lines of buildings. The info bubbles, will come up when when you are incorrectly using something, or if you hold down the mouse in the building selection toolbar. Most of these bubbles are much more helpful than the manual.

Speaking of the manual, this one is not very good at all. While it is over 50 pages long, and paper as opposed to on-line, that doesn't make it good. Most of the descriptions are just that. No explanation of how to use them, or what they really do. The manual doesn't tell anything about how to achieve higher star ratings, or tips on keeping people happy. It just isn't very helpful.

    Problems:
The only real problem with Yoot Tower is its failure to switch back the number of colors upon quitting. When you start, you are forced to change your color settings to 256. That fine, but then it should automatically change back the color setting when you quit.

    Conclusion:
If you couldn't get enough of the original SIM Tower, or if you just like simulations, this game is for you. With it's new expanded gameplay, and the thrill of controlling hundreds of virtual people, Yoot Tower will keep you entertained for hours.

    Pros:Cons:
  • Various locations
  • All new structures
  • Great graphics for only 256 colors
  • Nice interfacel
  • Many More disasters than SIM Tower
  • Doesn't switch back number of colors
  • Some things are too hard to find
  • Time seems to go by to fast
  • Unhelpful manual
  • Hard to know what conditions you need for more stars

  • Rating: 6 out of ten Mac Faces.
